To be perfectly honest, prior to this year my knowledge of Iceland consisted of probably being able to point it out on a map. I had always heard the age-old adage that Iceland is green and Greenland is ice.. but never in a million years did I consider it a travel destination. Not that I ever considered it a place I’d never go, it just never even grazed my thoughts.
But then I started reading Unlocking Kiki and stumbled upon this post about the Blue Lagoon from Hand Luggage Only. Within basically two weeks, I fell head over heels in love with Iceland. I read everything I could about it. And it seemed to be popping up every where I looked. I couldn’t get it out of my mind. When I mentioned it to Paul one evening, he looked up and flights, whoa, they were really cheap. Like surprisingly cheap. No deals needed.
So an e-mail was sent out to our friends, and a day or two later we have tickets to Iceland booked. In our typical travel fashion, our trip allowed only 2 full days in Iceland, but with just a 4.5 hour red-eye flight from New York, its not unreasonable for this European city to be a weekend destination. And it certainly only took 2 days for me to declare this my favorite trip to date. Icelanders who don’t bat an eye when you speak English, stunning (and I mean STUNNING) natural wonders, and just gloriously good food makes it all an easy call. I can’t recommend Iceland enough.
